As a GP, I often see patients who present with chronic tension headaches, a clicking jaw, or worn-down teeth. Frequently, the culprit is bruxism—the involuntary grinding or clenching of teeth, often during sleep. While traditional solutions involve bulky mouthguards, many are surprised to learn that botulinum toxin (Botox) is an incredibly effective medical intervention for this condition.

The procedure involves injecting the toxin into the masseter muscle—the large muscle that runs from the cheekbone to the lower jaw. By temporarily relaxing this muscle, we reduce the force of the clenching without affecting your ability to chew or speak. This not only protects your dental health but can significantly alleviate the facial pain and headaches associated with chronic grinding.

One of the secondary effects of overactive masseter muscles is a widening of the lower face, giving the jaw a more “square” appearance. As the muscle relaxes through treatment, it often leads to a subtle slimming of the jawline, restoring a softer, more oval contour. This is a perfect example of where medical necessity and aesthetic refinement overlap. When administered by a doctor who understands the complex musculature of the jaw, it is a safe, life-changing treatment for those living with the daily discomfort of bruxism.
